Background and Team Members
A team 4 students has been chosen to work together from a list of module students to work on a new project converting a large open portion of G242 in University of South Wales to two Flexible separate teaching and laboratory spaces with secure project storage areas. The new rooms are to be used by both Engineering undergraduates, postgraduates and commercial research services customers as flexible research/teaching spaces with secure areas for storing project work.
The team lead on this project was not chosen by module leader so the team had to choose the suitable leader.
The members of the team include:
Ahmed Al Balushi (me): worked on a similar project turning an 166m2 store into Gaming Cafe which provide Billiard tables, computers and private rooms for rent.
Abdallah Al Oraimi : 3rd year student studying mechanical engineering.
Abdulaziz Al-Mansoori : 3rd year student studying mechanical engineering.
Mohammad Alghofaili : 3rd year student studying mechanical engineering.
Ahmed has worked on teams with Abdulaziz and have some knowledge on how to work together as it is not the first time. Abdallah Al Oraimi is a classmate, we knew each other but never worked together in a team. Mohammad Alghofaili was a new person I have never met before neither we worked together. A meeting was required every 2 weeks with module leader to present our meetings logbook. In addition to the meeting with module leader we ware required to do face to face meetings with team members. The First meeting was arranged to take place on the 29th of Jan 2020
The Initial Meeting (Stage 1: Forming)
The day of the face-to-face meeting at the university of south wales Treforest campus has arrived. All team members are present. The plan includes:
Personal introductions
Information about the project
Discussion around team roles and responsibilities
Discussion around team norms for working together
Introduction on how to share ideas, brainstorm, store project documentation, etc
The colleagues are eager to meet one another. Every one of them has known about each other, despite the fact that they have not cooperated as a group previously. They accept they each carry an incentive to this undertaking. While there was some conversation around jobs and obligations. There was a concession to what expected to complete. In the beginning, not everything was clear, so we started by pointing out the project requirements.
The onsite meeting is going well. The team members are getting to know each other and have been discussing their personal lives outside of work - hobbies, family, etc. they are engaged with each other and genuinely seem to like each other!
As the team did not know from where to start, I planned before the meeting to talk about the general points we need to discuss, and a task was generated to each team member. As we went through the meeting the team decided to let me to be the team leader. As Abdallah and Abdelaziz know each other well they ware given the task to take room measurement. Mohammed was also happy to help them out. Mohammed was given the task to build a list of tables to be used in rooms. I assigned the task of research on building technique in addition of finding out the tasks needed to be done for the next meeting.
Stage 2: Storming
During the first meeting a discussion has been made to allocate the tasks
The team members have gone back to their home and are beginning work on their tasks. They are interacting via WhatsApp Group and the project is off to a good start. And then the arguments begin.
Second meeting, in this meeting there was one main objective which was the floor design. We had a brainstorming session to produce the most suitable floor layout for the 2 rooms. There was a lot of requirements but there was a focus on being able to equip as many computers as possible in each room, providing a smartboard, one computer for stuff use and a Secure area. Mohammed stated that those requirements was impossible to achieve and there is a need to put Secure areas outside G242 room. In addition, he insistent removing Smartboards from class and using another technology which mirror the teacher screen to all monitors in the Class. The problem was he did not know how to do it and neither had the time to search about it. The team started to review every single idea the team has given. The requirements and budget had been stated again to all team member. All team members started to understand that it is necessary to know what is important in this project and what things that could be removed or reduced to make this project possible. So, each team member of team has given the chance to design the layout and get each other feedback so everyone can improve his design. As soon as the team done the task, the team combined all ideas into one final design and gave it to Ahmed to 3D design it and making sure that the final design is appropriate and can fit in the rooms.
While interacting via WhatsApp Group, I alluded back to the standard procedures the group set in their up close and personal gathering and worked with the group to guarantee that there was an arrangement set up for how choices are made in the group and who has duty regarding deciding.
Throughout the following gatherings, the contentions/differences were at the very least and when they occurred, they were turned out rapidly by the group. In any case, I observed how things were proceeding to hold customary virtual gatherings to guarantee the group was moving the correct way. On every two weeks, the group united for an up close and personal gathering. As the working connections of the colleagues began improving, work began seeing huge improvement on the undertaking.
Stage 3: Norming
The group has now been cooperating for about 2 months. There is certainly a feeling of collaboration among the gathering. There are not many contentions and contradictions that can't be settled among the group. They bolster each other on the undertaking - critical thinking issues, settling on choices as a group, sharing data and guaranteeing that the standard procedures set up for the group are followed.
Also, the colleagues are helping each other to develop and build up their abilities. For example, Mohammed has worked intimately with Abdulaziz to search on the network equipment setup which they finished perfectly. Also, Mohammed worked with Abdallah in finding and calculating the number of Electrical sockets, Network sockets.
In general, the colleagues are turning out to be companions. They appreciate each other's conversation - both while chipping away at the venture and night-time by means of imparting through texting or via phone.
Stage 4: Performing
The group is currently viewed as a "high performing group." It wasn't simple getting to this stage yet they made it! They are working viably as a gathering - supporting one another and depending on the gathering in general to settle on choices on the venture. They can conceptualize adequately to take care of issues and are profoundly energetic to arrive at the ultimate objective as a gathering. When there is struggle in the group -, for example, a difference on the most proficient method to approach achieving an errand - the gathering can work it out all alone without depending in the group head to intercede and settle on choices for them.
Ahmed checks in with the group - lauding them for their difficult work and their advancement. The group praises the achievements came to en route. At the point when important, Ahmed gives a connection from the group to the officials for choices when extra help is required.
The task is on schedule and inside spending plan. Achievements are being met. The group is satisfied with how well the task is coming.
Stage 5: Adjourning
The venture has finished. It was an immense achievement!. It has been an incredible 2.5 months cooperating… with some high points and low points obviously. Every one of the people on the undertaking will miss working with one another.
